Different procedures address different needs. Your eye health, prescription, and daily activities all matter when considering an option with a surgeon.

Cataracts

Cataract surgery replaces a cloudy natural lens with an artificial lens. Learn how cataracts affect vision and when a surgical discussion becomes relevant.

LASIK & PRK

These laser procedures reshape the cornea to reduce dependence on glasses or contacts. Candidacy depends on factors including corneal health and prescription stability.

Implantable contact lenses

A surgeon places a lens inside the eye while leaving the natural lens in place. A detailed evaluation determines whether this approach fits your eyes.

Understanding the procedure

Limbal relaxing incisions

Limbal relaxing incisions, or LRIs, are small incisions near the edge of the cornea. They change its curvature to reduce astigmatism—the uneven curvature that can cause blurred or distorted vision.

LRIs are sometimes performed during cataract surgery. They do not treat every type or degree of astigmatism, and glasses or other correction can still be needed afterward.

A decision led by your surgeon

Your surgeon evaluates whether LRIs are appropriate by reviewing:

  • The amount and pattern of your astigmatism
  • Corneal measurements and overall eye health
  • Previous eye procedures and your healing history
  • Your vision goals and other correction options

Ask how LRIs compare with alternatives, such as a toric lens implant during cataract surgery, and discuss risks including infection, irregular astigmatism, and under- or overcorrection.

Clarify your care before planning surgery

Before assuming a referral or co-management arrangement, ask Jewel City Optometry about our actual role in your care. Confirm whether our office provides relevant evaluations, helps with referrals, or participates in follow-up for the procedure you are considering.

Your surgical team should explain who is responsible for each stage of care, including recovery visits and urgent concerns. A clear plan helps you know where to turn.
