Understanding the cause

Similar symptoms can have different causes

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is inflammation of the thin tissue covering the white of your eye and the inside of your eyelids. Redness alone does not tell you the cause—or which treatment you need.

Viral

Often causes watery irritation and can occur with a cold. Viral conjunctivitis can spread easily.

Bacterial

Can cause discharge or eyelids that stick together. An examination helps determine whether prescription treatment is needed.

Allergic

Often brings itching and watering in both eyes. Allergy-related conjunctivitis is not contagious.

Other eye conditions

Dry eye, contact lens irritation, and corneal problems can also cause redness. Some need urgent attention.

What your evaluation involves

Dr. Arlene T. Yepremian reviews your symptoms and examines your eyes to look beyond the redness. Your care recommendations are based on the findings, not a self-diagnosis.

  • Your symptoms and timing

When irritation started, whether one or both eyes are affected, and any itching, discharge, pain, or vision changes.

  • Exposure and contact lens history

Recent illness, allergies, exposure to someone with pink eye, and how you wear and care for contact lenses.

  • An examination and clear next steps

A check of your vision and eye structures, followed by guidance on treatment, precautions, and follow-up.

Simple precautions while you arrange care

Some causes of pink eye are contagious. These steps help protect your eyes and reduce the spread of infection:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before and after touching the area around your eyes.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes or sharing towels, washcloths, pillows, or eye makeup.
  • Stop wearing contact lenses and use glasses until your eye doctor advises that it is safe to resume.
  • Do not use leftover or someone else’s prescription eye drops. The wrong medication can delay appropriate care.

Pain, light sensitivity, or reduced vision? Seek prompt care.

These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than routine online scheduling. A red eye in a contact lens wearer also warrants prompt attention. Call us right away; if you cannot reach us, seek urgent eye care. Sudden vision loss or severe eye pain requires immediate emergency care.
