Demodex & Eyelid Health
Itchy, red eyelids deserve a closer look. Demodex mites can contribute to eyelid inflammation, but finding the cause of your irritation comes first.
At Jewel City Optometry, Dr. Arlene T. Yepremian, O.D., evaluates your eyelids and eye surface to guide care that fits your symptoms and examination findings.
Understanding Demodex
Tiny mites. A closer look at eyelid irritation.
Demodex are microscopic mites that naturally live on human skin, including around eyelash follicles. Their presence alone does not mean you have an eye problem.
When they become too numerous, they can contribute to blepharitis—inflammation along the eyelid edges. This can leave your lids itchy, red, or uncomfortable, with buildup around the base of your lashes.
Dry eye, allergies, and other eyelid conditions can cause similar symptoms. An examination helps distinguish Demodex-related inflammation from other concerns so your care addresses the right cause.
What you notice—and what we look for
Tell us when your symptoms started, how often they return, and what you have already tried. These details help us understand your eyelid health.
Symptoms worth discussing
- Itching along the eyelid edges
- Redness or irritation around your lashes
- Crusts or debris at the base of your eyelashes
- Burning, grittiness, or recurring eye discomfort
An examination, not a guess
Your doctor examines your eyelid margins, lashes, and eye surface under magnification. Sleeve-like deposits around the lash bases are an important sign of Demodex-related blepharitis.
We also assess for overlapping concerns, including dry eye, before discussing treatment.
Your care plan
Clinician-directed treatment. Gentle daily care.
If your examination confirms Demodex-related blepharitis, your doctor will explain appropriate treatment, how to use it, and when to return for reassessment.
A routine you understand
We discuss eyelid hygiene suited to your eyes, including which products to use and how to clean your lids gently. Cleaning alone does not always address Demodex, so follow your full treatment plan.
Protect sensitive eyelid skin
Avoid harsh scrubbing, undiluted essential oils, and homemade mite treatments near your eyes. Ask us before adding an eyelid product to your routine.
Review your progress
Follow-up lets us check your eyelids, review your comfort, and adjust care when needed.
