Diabetic retinopathy occurs when diabetes damages blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. It can lead to leakage, swelling, or abnormal blood vessel growth that threatens vision.
A retinal evaluation, often including dilation, checks for these changes. Your findings and medical history guide the timing of follow-up and whether you need a retinal specialist.
Diet alone is not a proven treatment for reversing diabetic retinopathy. Balanced nutrition supports diabetes management, but it does not replace eye monitoring or treatment recommended by your eye care team.
Make an eye health evaluation part of your care routine.
